{February 11, 2013}   I am still alive including crochet.

Hello everyone and thank you to those of you who noticed that I have been missing. It really is appreciated. I just want to let you know that I am alive and well (sort of).

My massive apologies first to twogirlsandsomepolish for my delay in sending my part of our nail polish swap. It will be on its way to you this week. I hope you like the products and that they are worth the (long) wait. Again Im sorry, Ill send you an email once I can get into my account to confirm this. I love the stuff you sent me, it is awesome and I can see Pure Ice becoming a fave, I will blog it once you have my package.

The back end of 2012 and early 2013 has been a run of one thing after another. I wont bore you with the details as there are always people much worse off but I will say Im not good at handling problems and prefer to stick my head in the sand, sometimes it works and the crap passes, sometimes it doesnt and just makes things worse. Christmas and the New Year were hard with everything going on plus its the first since I lost my Dad but we managed to have a good one.

I got a little bit lost in self pity for a while and as a result I lost all enthusiasm for pretty cosmetics and pretty nail polish. I just felt so shitty inside that I couldn’t see the point of making an effort. The last month has seen me return to my old hobby of crochet and I have gotten a few unfinished projects completed which perked me up a bit. Ill stick a few pics at the end but will most likely start another blog for those bits as I dont wanna bore you with it. I have typed several drafts which has helped me put things into persepective, I doubt Ill ever publish them in case my Dads family ever came across them but it has helped to get my bitterness and anger out of my head.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, I bought a blush trio yesterday, the first cosmetic purchase in well over a month so things must be returning to normal a bit right? There is a long way to go before things get back to normal for me, normal may not the right word actually as I dont think some aspects of relationships will ever be what is was, resolved is maybe what I should say, I am working on it though and hope to be back soon with nail art and cosmetic reviews and raeding all your blogs. (I dont like the changes to the wordpress reader by the way grrrrr)

As promised here is what has been keeping me slightly sane lately. If you are on Ravelry leave me your unsername in the comments and I will add you and have a snoop :)

{December 22, 2012}   Out With The Old, In With The New.

Things have been so busy here that I’ve not really had time to post much due to Christmas and all it brings with it. I’m not feeling the Christmas vibe this year at all, I’m excited to see my Daughter open her gifta but have not experienced the usual rush I get about this time of year, I actually feel pretty grumpy.

I have been reflecting on the past year a lot, which is something I’m sure that many people do as the New Year approaches. 2012 has been a big emotional rollercoaster for me, some of the most important things have happened to me this year.

In January I suddenly lost my Father, he was 56 and just going about his normal daily crap when he had a massive heart attack and died. I wont bullshit and say he was the perfect Father, nor was I the perfect Daughter, we both made mistakes and he died with an unresolved issue clouding our relationship, but at the end of the day I know he loved me and I deeply hope he knew I loved him, and that’s what I focus on when I think of him. I miss him much, much more than I thought was possible and some days I forget he is gone and do silly things like go to call him, time is not healing for me just yet as it still feels raw, I can’t believe almost a year has passed. Christmas this year will be very different without him.

I have had health problems of my own, I had a lump in my armpit which turned out to be nothing serious but with a history of breast cancer in my family it was a worrying few months, I blogged about my weight a while back and nothing has changed on that situation, I’m not losing anymore but I’m not gaining any either.

In October I got married, I have been with my man for almost 13 years now, we had a ten-year engagement and I thought we would never get round to getting married, we were never going to have the big white wedding as the thought of that fills me with diarrhea, we wanted to piss off abroad to somewhere hot, but something always came up meaning it never happened, this year we just thought fuck it and booked the registry office in the next town  and got married in secret. Everything about it was perfect.

I know, it’s a cliché, but the biggest lesson I have learnt in 2012 is that life really is too short and you don’t know what is just around the corner. 2013 will be the year I grab life with both hands and stop giving a shiny shit what others think of me. More of that in my next post.

What big lessons has 2012 brought for you? Has in been a good year, or a shit one?

{December 17, 2012}   Nails Of The Week #14

Aplogies for the rushed post, with xmas coming so quickly things have been so busy. I have updated my swatch page for anyone who is interested. I have been drawn to Summery colours this week. Its freezing here and looking at a bit of colour cheers me up a little. My nails seem to be taking forever to grow back.

Rimmel 60 Seconds

Rimmel 60 Seconds, Funtime Fuscia and Sunrise, both are lovely to work with, great formula and fast drying.

Tuesday, Rimmel Lasting Finish, Double Esspresso.

Tuesday, Rimmel Lasting Finish, Double Esspresso. I cant say anything about this polish, the formula is good, drying time is good, everything is good so I dont know why I feel blegh about this one.  Its just,,,,, blegh.

Wednesday

Wednesday, Technic Tawny Port. Recieved in my Beauty Box subscription, one of the worst polishes I have ever used, which is a shame as Technic are usually good polishes. The chipping started within a few mins of drying and massive chunks has chipped off by morning. I was planning on regifting this but I’m not that mean, its in the bin.

Thursday - Another hit from the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure range.

Thursday – Sally Hansen, Casting Call. Another hit from the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure range, purchased in Poundland. I went back for more shades and these are selling really quickly. Streaky on the first coat but it evened itself out on the 2nd (and last) coat.  Big brush which I love.

Friday - Rimmel Lasting Finish, All Spice. I only paid 50p for this and for that price it performed well, I need four coats as its quite sheer, which meant it took longer to dry, but considering the amounts of coats a ten min wait is pretty reasonable I think. I love the shade but I dont think it suits me, maybe with a tan it would be better?

Saturday-Sally Hansen Extreme Wear, Emerald City. Watery formula and a skinny brush made this tricky to apply, I used three coats in total as its not as opaque as it looks. Chipped the next day, same as the others I've tried from the Extreme Wear range.

Sunday. I've not used pink in a while and have been unlucky with every attempt at using Essie's Mod Squad. I always smudge it, so I decided to give it another go, it turned out ok, I aded two coats of Calvin Kliens Hallucinate for sparkles. Hate those tiny square calvin Klien lids, you need to hold it at an angle in order for the brush to be flat on your nails.

You can probably guess from my title that I’m not happy with my box this month. The box was late and because I’ve waited in everday for the parcel since the 4th December I wasn’t in the bestest of moods to begin with, their customer services could do with a shake up too. There are still several unanswered posts about missing boxes on their customer forums from several days ago yet complaints through Facebook are answered within the hour. Not everyone is on Facebook, not everyone wants to be either.

SheSaidBeauty costs £9 a month plus £2.95 p+p, you fill out a profile on registration, in which you tell SheSaidBeauty the kind of products you are interested in and ones you are not. You also fill out information about your hair colour, skin tone etc.

I thought this was for the purpose of customising the box, but I’ve since learnt from a SheSaidBeauty employee they don’t use the profiles in that way, products are selected at random and the profiles are for market research to send subscribers offers etc, that explains the influx of emails I’ve had since joining. If I had known this on registration I would not have filled out the bloody survey.  It also explains why people with fair skin get dark fake tan samples.  You are meant to receieve 5 “deluxe” samples each month, Im not sure if “deluxe” refers to the brand or size but either way its a fail.

I have zero interest in skincare, I’m happy with what I use and if I mess about trying other stuff I usually break out. I joined primarily for make-up items ( the only category I checked as very interested in) and whilst I dont expect a box full of of make-up I do expect variety.  I have recieved 15 plus samples from my three boxes and out of these only two have been make-up items and the rest has been mostly skincare.

I caved and had a sneek peek at the products on offer and I was pretty excited as there was a couple of make-items and coloured contacts, I wrongly assumed that I’d get at least one in my box. From reading the reviews it seems that a lot of people who want skincare have gotten the cosmetics and vice versa.

I’ve rambled on enough, I am cancelling my subscription as out of my three boxes costing over £30 I’ve only had one product that I’ve actually used on a regular basis, whilst others may be happy with thier boxes, its just not for me and that £30 could have been well spent on products I actually want.  I may try another subscription service, Im still undecied. Sorry for the rant, here’s what I got in my box.

BaoBab Regenerating and Firming Body Oil. £35 for 100ml.This is a decent sample size of 30ml oil is something I very rarely use

Minvita BaoBab Regenerating and Firming Body Oil. £35 for 100ml.
This is a decent sample size of 30ml oil is something I very rarely use becaue I hate the feeling of it on my skin. For those who like this kind of thing its a decent enough amount of product to give a proper trial.

111220122337

Dr Duve Skin Boosting Cream – £129 for 50ml
Dr Duve Anti Ageing and Firming Eye Cream – £115 for 30ml
These two tiny sachets make up two of my five items. If had that kind of money to spends on creams, there is no way I would do so based on using these two sachets. Its kind of an insult that these have counted as two products.

YaNa Kiss Savon Noir - £10 for 400gDont be fooled by the paper tied up with string, beyond that is a little clear tub, like the ones you get dips in from takeaways, I get bad reactions from soaps so avoid it, the smell of this is not to great either, my Daughter describes it as "rhubarb erupting from a volcano"

111220122336

Technic Nail Polish – Tawny Port – £1.25 for 12ml
The last of my five items is a nail polish, its the only full sized product in the five items. I have nothing against the brand Technic and I already own several products from this brand including nail polish, but I have seen this particular polish on sale for 50p so I assumed it to be a dud. I gave it a quick swatch and once it was dried it chipped straight away, the colour is like dozens I have already so this will be going into my little sisters stocking.

Amie Spring Clean Cooling Clay Mask. Full Sized 15ml Sachet £1.50
Jing Whole Leaf Teabags £5.40 for 15 bags or £30 for 100
Because these are bonus items I don’t like to moan about them but to be honest, its freezing here in the UK and I wont be putting anything cooling on my face anytime soon. I’ll prob use this in the Spring when its a warmer climate, or pack for my Spanish holidays.
I have had green tea before and almost vomitted my lunch up so these will be passed on, if I can find someone who likes them.

I was recently tagged for The Leibster Award byProduct Hoochie, No Bottle Left Behind.,nattan23 and Nail Art For Funn. Thank you so so much for thinking of me. I would have loved to have done four seperate posts but the truth is I’m a lazy cow so I’m gonna cheat and skip the 11 facts (I am boring trust me) and answer a few of the questions from all four of you, and I tag anyone who’s name begins with a P.

20121124-181634.jpg

So what is the Liebster Blog Award?

It’s an award that was reputedly started in Germany in order to give smaller bloggers recognition for their hard work. You receive this award from a fellow blogger that feels your blog is both worthy & important to them.

The rules are:

1) Post eleven facts about yourself

2) Answer the questions the tagger has set for you and create eleven questions for people you’ve nominated

3) Choose eleven people to give this award to (with fewer than 200 followers) and link them in your post

4) Go to their page and tell them

5) Remember, no tag backs

Here We Go!

If you could have ANY super power what would you have?

I would love to be able to time travel. I’d go back and correct all the mistakes I have made in the past.

Would you get plastic surgery?

I have always said that I’d love a boob job and the ones I have a non existent but I actually think that if I ever had the money I’d wuss out.

Do you think an engagement ring should be a suprise or should the woman pick it herself?

Either way is good but I’d prefer it to be a suprise but that backfired on my Husband, he gave me the ring on Christmas day twelve years ago but sadly it was way too big, I wanted to show it off, especially to his ex ( I was 21 back then ) so wore it under a ring that fitted me, to cut a long story short, I got drunk on boxing day, fell and lost both rings. He bought me the same one a few weeks later in a size that fit.

What makes you really happy?

I am truly happy when its a weekend and my Daughter, Husband and I are at home with no plans. We don’t bother getting dressed, we eat shite all day, watch cheesey films, have a nap and just generally potter about the house. Bliss.

What perfume do you like most?

Dot by Marc Jacobs – which can be bought in most high street stores that sell perfume, or if you can’t get away from your wife you could order online, but make sure to get the 50ml size as the bottle is cuter. – hint hint husband.

What is your favorite book?

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. I always read this book once a year and my copy is all creased and battered now, I always cry at the end and if I ever have another child I would to name them after the two main chartacters. Rudy for a boy and Liesel for a girl.

What’s your favorite TV show?

An Idiot Abroad. I love Karl Pilkington and his idiotic theories. Ricky Gervais is a bit of an annoying pillock though. That laugh sets my teeth on edge.

How many kids do you have or see yourself having?

I have a Daughter who is fastly approaching eight years old. She is the best thing I have ever done with my life and I am so so so proud of her. We must have gone right somewhere as she is the best behaved hard working child I have ever known (Im biased though). She gets her brains from her Dad and her looks from me. Just kidding, the brains and looks both come from me :) I could not imagine loving anyone as much as I love her.

Wine or Beer?

Niether, give me a vodka or a cocktail everytime.

Which celeb would you want to rescue you from a situation? (any situation)

Karl Pilkington or Kieth Lemon. Both are so funny that it would take my mind off whatever the situation is that I was being rescued from.

What’s your favorite accessory?

This year I have been wearing a lot of scarves, not so much because of trends but because its absolutley freaking freezing at the moment. Im even wearing one in bed.

There we go all done, thank you again for thinking of me.

{December 5, 2012}   Husband, shopping and me.

I have been married for just over two months now but I have been with my Husband for almost thirteen years. We are not the most romantic of couples, you wont find us walking round the street holding hands or kissing in the cinema, but I know he loves me and I love him as much as I did when I first met him, if not more,  2012 has been eventful, I lost my Dad suddenly earlier in the year and I’m so glad I had my Husband in my life. He stopped me from going to pieces and kept life normal for me.

Like I said we’re not romantic of couples but every now and then he does something that suprises me, If you read my nails of the week then you will know that I usually use Essie’s Fill The Gap Base Coat. I paid £3 for it and had been unable to find it again for anywhere near that price, £9 was the cheapest I found,  until my husband offered to drive me to another branch of the store a few towns away as he had a few days off work.

I found my base coat and we also called in Poundland and not only did he not moan but he also rummaged amongst the cosmetics to find me bargains, I didn’t even have to tell him which brands to look for, my chatter must have sunk in somewhere along the line. We may not be love’s young dream but when I looked across at my stocky skinheaded man rummaging through rails of ladies cosmetics full of determination I felt so loved and happy.

*I’m not telling him it would have been cheaper to just pay the £9 for my base coat :)

{November 25, 2012}   Nails Of The Week #12
View All My Polish and Swatches Here I’ll be updating the page on a weekly basis.

Sadly two of my nails broke this week and they just looked really odd so they all had to be shortened. I took great pleasure in indulging in one of my past disgusting habits, I bit them all down to size! I feel naked with short nails  but it is interesting to see how my polish looks totally different on my stubs.

W7 – Lava Flow.
Sally Hansen Super Shine.

Lava Flow is a white polish packed with glitter. One coat would have done but I always apply two, the glitter disperses evenly and the polish has  a decent drying time, the glitter does not feel grainy once its dry which is a mega plus for me, if I can feel the glitter on my nail then it sets my teeth on edge. Eugh!

Revlon Matte Suede- Emerald City.

I picked this polish up yesterday,  its  a little thicker than the other Revlons I own and suprisingly one coat would have been sufficient, the second really brought the shimmer to life. This polish is not totally matte as I had initally belived. The semi matte finish teamed with the subtle shimmer gives the finished nail a look of velvet which is unlike any other polish I own. The drying time is excellent, I was able to crochet ten minutes after application, normally I have to wait several hours! I applied a matte top coat to see what it would look like totally mattified and although I like both, I prefer the way Revlon intended it to be.  I have a Sally Hansen polish by the same name, I’ll have to compare the colours when I remember.

I am trying to work my way through my untrieds and I needed something that dried quickly as I left it late to paint my nails. I chose Instyle Coral because its dark enough outside my window without having darkness on my nails. If I have too much darkness around me it affects my mood. I applied two coats but on closer inspection I should have used three, as its pretty streaky, drying time is really great, I had no sheet printsthis morning despite painting my nails only 30 mins before getting into bed, I usually have to paint them a good two hours before bed and even then I regulary get sheet prints. Its handy to know that I can use the 60 Seconds range in a rush.

Technic Glitters – Bonanza.

The wired polish was still going strong so I just added a coat of Bonanza over the top, in the bottle it looks like a blue base with blue glitter but its actually a black base, despite being really watery it had great coverage., and you can see that just one coat totally changed the Wired underneath. This stuff really stinks though so I doubt it will be getting much use.

Rimmel 60 Seconds – Shocking.
Essie – Nothing Else Metals.

I had another go at stamping today and the results are getting better but are far from perfect. Shocking is a very bright pink/fuscia which lives up to its name.  I doubt I’ll ever use on my hands again, but come Summer time this will be perfect for the feet.

{November 25, 2012}   Nails Of The Week #11
I apologise for the messy nails this week, I’ve been unwell and forgot to take several of my after clean up shots. Every nail polish used this week has been purchased at Poundland :)

Products Used: Essie Ridge Filler.

NYC – Late Night Latte.

I needed to apply three coats of Late Night Latte to get in anywhere near opaque, its frosted finish meant that a lot of brush strokes were visible so to cover this up I painted on two coats of MaxFactors Extra Glitter. The photo with the glitter looked absolute shite so I’m not posting it.

Tuesday 20th November
Products Used: Essie Fill The Gap Base Coat.
Sally hansen Complete Salon Manicure – Without A Stitch And Model Behaviour.
Sally Hansen Super Shine.

This base coat is getting so low that I have to tip it an an awkward angle to get the product on the brush, any tips to make it easier is much appreciated. Without a stitch is a lovely nude polish but I’m not too sure its the right nude for my skin tone so I added blue tips to my nails, I’ll keep this polish to use under others, Without a Stitch is streaky on the first coat but evened out on the second and third, drying took forever. I got a good two days out of this and would have gotten more but I wanted a change.

Sinful Colors – Daddy’s Girl – Pre Clean Up, Sorry

I have worn this polish before but was dissappointed as I didnt get a full days wear out of it, however now that I have learnt about base and top coats this lasted really well. Quite watery and streaky and I’m not a big fan of Sinful’s smaller brushes. I found I had to use three coats to even it all out, but I really do love the colour which is hard to catch on camera :( Its a dark purple with subtle shimmer.

Friday 23rd November.

Sinful Colors – Fly away.
Revlon – Blue Lagoon.

Its anti-bullying awareness week and as part of this scheme my Daughter and her little school chums are going to be wearing blue, so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon and paint my nails blue. I used Revlon’s Blue Lagoon (the pale one) and Sinful Colors Fly Away, I decided to have another at stamping but it turned out crappy.

Sinful Colors – Big Daddy.

I asked my Husband to pick a colour, and he picked orange. I had this in my untrieds so I went for it. The polish is thicker than most of the other Sinful polishes Ive tried which made for a nice smooth opaque application. The colour will look great in Summer as well as Autumn and I cant wait to try stamping with it. Dried pretty quickly.

Monday 12th November.

Products Used: Essie Fill The Gap
Essie – Nothing Else Metals.
Essie Carry On.
Essie Instant Dry Oil Protector
Striping Tape.

I have been searching around on the net for some inspiration and I have been admiring the many lattice manicures so thought I’d give it a go. It looked like a lot of work so I decided to do the lattice pattern on every other nail.  I used Nothing Else Metals as a base, and once that was dry I started applying the striping tape, it was very fiddly, luckily I had pre-cut the tape but I had difficulty it making the spaces even so I thought “bollocks to this” and what was meant to be a lattice effect was now going to be a diagonal pattern. Once I had the striping tape in place I painted on two coats of Carry On and waited for my nails to dry, I then removed the tape and was saddened to see it took some polish with it, the end result was a mess, Im going to post the pic so I can look back and learn from my mistakes.  I didn’t bother cleaning my fingers up because it was not staying on.

Tuesday 13th November.

Products Used: Essie Fill The Gap.
Essie Penny Talk.
Calvin Klein – Opus
Sally Hansen Super Shine.

This is one of the best polishes I have used in a long time, usually I don’t like gold on a whole nail but this one is different, its more like a rose gold, Essie could not have named this polish better as its the colour of a newly minted penny, I used to collect shiny pennies as a child and using this brought back happy memories. Its a thick formula and it sets quickly so you need to work fast with this, one coat is opaque but two coats are WOW. I wanted to see how it would look with a more sheer polish layered on top so I put on a coat of Opus on my index finger.

Rimmel 60 Seconds – Blue My Mind.
Rimmel Lasting Finish – Disco Ball

I applied two coats of Blue My Mind (which looks more like a purple to the eye) followed by one coat of Disco Ball, I’m not shying away from glitter since discovering the tin foil removal method.  The brush in Disco Ball picked up a lot of glitter and one coat was more than enough.

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure – Terracotta
Sally Hansen Super Shine.

Today I wanted something natural so I chose Terracotta. I am in love with shade and hope it lasts a few days so I can keep it on, its grown-up and natural looking, I cant wait to try the other shades in the range. The formula is just the right consistency, the brush reminds me of the ones in Insta-Dri range, I found it picked up too much liquid for me so I had to wipe the excess off often.

Today is “Children In Need” in the UK,  I will be donating via my Daughter’s school, she will be wearing her pyjamas to school for the day, she is so happy about this as she almost lives in her pj’s. I wanted to show my support by painting Children In Need’s mascot Pudsey Bear on my nails.  I just removed the polish from my ring finger from yesterdays manicure and copied an image from a Google search. The bear was super easy to paint on. What do you think.

Essie Fill The Gap Base Coat.
Calvin Klein – Opus
Attitude Matte Top Coat.
This is one of the most awkward polishes to use, it has a square lid which needs to be held on the diagnol in order for the brush to lay flat on the nail, the brush itself is tiny and, because of the lid shape you have to tilt you head to see what you are doing.  The bristles are shit quality and bend over on themselves, it also does not pick up enough product to coat the nail withour re-dipping. I expected much more from Calvin Klein. The colour itself is great but not worth the aggro, I applied a Matte top coat but I think I liked it better shiney.
